Color Control Freak (or Geek?)

Bishop builds color profileOkay, I admit it, I’m a bit of a color freak/geek. Maybe not as big of a color freak/geek as some of my friends, but none-the-less, I care about my color.

That’s why I was excited to attend the Color Control Freak 08 seminar in San Francisco. The all day seminar was taught by Marc Aguilera, a color consultant for X-rite, and the Color Management Director for Encompus design studio. Marc has deep knowledge of color management practices and willingly shares his secrets with us throughout the seminar and via his blog.

Now that Pantone has been swallowed up by X-rite, there are some touchy-feelie aspects to the seminar along with the hard core technical stuff. Mark covered the spectrum from the message and meaning of color all the way through best practice application print settings.

He also introduced some new products (well, that’s the real reason for the seminar, right!) including X-rite’s new ColorMunki and Pantone’s new Goe Color Matching System. The ColorMunki is geared to the designer and photographer market, and comes with both easy-to-use ColorMunki software and the hardware spectrophotometer. The new Goe Color Matching System adds over 2000 new colors to the Pantone spectrum.

If you care about color, I recommend that you take the time to educate yourself on color management practices. I can’t tell you the number of artists I see struggling on a daily basis, consuming vast amounts of (costly!) ink and paper. Unfortunately, color management has a reputation of being hard, difficult and BORING, but products like the ColorMunki are making the process much easier and almost FUN!  Getting these basics under your belt will do wonders to ease your frustration level and give you predictable and reproducible color.

How do you deal with color management? Do you care? Why? Leave your comments here.

    Lyn,

It was great to have you in the seminar. San Francisco is such a great city and home to lots of color control freaks. If you have any questions please feel free to ask anytime.
