Tapscott at Norton Studio
The work of Linda Tapscott is currently on view at Norton Studio, located upstairs in the Pacific Art League, Palo Alto. Tapscott is inspired by the daily meditative walks she takes in the East Bay hills near Fremont, California. Her mixed-media work evokes stories that whisper evidence of the forest floor, of reflections on water, of a wintery landscape, all somehow pulling the viewer back into their own faded memories.
In this new body of work Tapscott expands her mixed-media techniques, creating three dimentional canvases that feature built-in boxes, sacks made from found netting, and a variety of natural elements from pine cones, to sticks and stones. She skillfully combines the found objects with color, paper scraps and a heavy dose of texture to create her richly collaged surfaces that are filled with hidden surprises.
She writes in the Artist Statement:
CANDID: without pretense or reserve: straightforward
Capturing a moment in nature…Whether landscape, sculptural, or abstract, my work consistently reveals a uniquely visceral relationship with my chosen medium. CANDID, my latest body of work represents my deep connection with nature. Forgoing the conventional use of canvas and brushes, I prefer to utilize wood panels which can be cut into, glued, sanded, and scrapped; creating a sculptural element in my work and removing the “flatness” of canvas. Paint brushes are rarely use; instead the paint is directly applied to the wood panels with rollers and I move the paint with fingers and rags into the deep texture which I builds up into layers with paper, cloth, cardboard, string, cement, wire, nails, and found objects.
When I engage in the process of creating art, I feel I am capturing the moment and I loose myself in the expression. I don’t think, I just act and respond to the work. It can be a spiritual meditation, or an expression of emotions. Each unique in the moment…CANDID.
The show runs through the end of the month:
