After going dark, Works/San Jose re: groups

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Works San JoseCommunity art and performance center, Works/San Jose, is reopening with a new show titled re: group that opens on August 1st and runs through September 13. The gala reception is schedule to coincide with the August First Friday event, August 1st, 7pm until late.

This is good news, as Works/San Jose offers local artists and curators a place to exhibit and engage with the community in an effort to expand the scope of cultural and artistic experience in downtown San Jose. Founded in 1977 by local artists to form an alternative non-profit art and performance center, Works/San Jose is an important cultural institution within the fabric of the south bay arts community. It would have been a real shame to see it close for good. (more…)

Getting out of the studio in search of art

Lyn Bishop photographs Su Blackwell Secret Garden at Hosfelt Gallery SF

I try to take at least a day a month to get out of the studio and see other art. It’s inspiring, and I often return to the studio with new ideas or solutions for work that I am in process with. For months now, I have been trying to plan a weekday gallery walk in San Francisco’s SOMA district. Finally, I made it happen, and had a very enjoyable art date with myself in the process.

Taking the train to San Francisco is easy, and with increasing gas prices and parking fees, it makes a lot of sense. There are many galleries within a walking distance of the Caltrains station, so I set off on foot to explore.

Certificates of Authenticity required for prints sold in California

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Bishop Certificate of AuthenticityThe Los Angeles Times reports a lawsuit filed against the temporary Louis Vuitton boutique created to sell Takashi Murakami products in the Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art. According to the Times, the Vuitton luxury shop failed to provide the collector with the proper documentation in the form of a Certificate of Authenticity for the the Murakami prints he purchased there.

Do you know what a Certificate of Authenticity is? Did you know that it is required by law to be provided upon collector request when purchasing a multiple in the State of California? Why should you care?

A Certificate of Authenticity, as defined by California Civil Code Section 1740-1745 is a written or printed description of the multiple sold, exchanged, or consigned by an art dealer.

A Multiple, as defined by this same California Civil Code is any fine print, photograph (positive or negative), sculpture cast, collage, or similar art object produced in more than one copy.

01SJ is a visual feast for global art on the edge

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

DJ Spooky Terra Nova: The Antarctic SuiteThis past week, San Jose hosted the second biennial 01SJ Global Festival of Art on the Edge in it’s downtown environs. Compared to my experience two years ago, when then called Zero One shared the limelight with ISEA (International Symposium on Electronic Art), this years festival was much more approachable and ultimately more enjoyable for the attendee with artwork that was easier to find and interact with.

On Friday night, the whole of downtown was abuzz with the energy of the arts. The First Friday SOFA Block Party generated exciting energy with people milling about, artists sharing their creativity, and music coming from all directions. The upbeat energy made for an enjoyable walk around town, from the SOFA district, to the San Jose Museum of Art (which I hope will consider staying open on First Fridays more often) to the various public art (best seen at night) placed around the central core of the city.
