The work of Linda Tapscott is currently on view at Norton Studio, located upstairs in the Pacific Art League, Palo Alto. Tapscott is inspired by the daily meditative walks she takes in the East Bay hills near Fremont, California. Her mixed-media work evokes stories that whisper evidence of the forest floor, of reflections on water, of a wintery landscape, all somehow pulling the viewer back into their own faded memories. Teaching the advanced three day playshop at San Francisco Center for the Book last week was pure enjoyment. The facilities at SFCB are spacious, well lit and filled with inspiring people and projects. While the center’s focus is devoted to teaching the art and craft of handmade bookmaking, they also offer a diverse curriculum of related classes for all skill levels.
This playshop (or if you prefer: workshop) focuses on the printed image. It is designed to allow artists to take their digital images and photography beyond the standard inkjet print. Students work with their own completed digital imagery to output files to alternative surfaces such as acrylic skins, handmade paper, non-porous surfaces, and transfer film. Participants work with several unique processes in alternative digital fine art printmaking during the workshop with an emphasis on exploration, experimentation and developing new approaches to printing their digital images. On Saturday, San Jose hosted a town hall meeting for artists interested in learning more about the city’s new Creative Entrepreneur Program.
Kim Walesh, Chief Strategist for the city, began by expressing her optimism that today, more than ever, there is more opportunity for artists to be a part of the San Jose economy. Artist based business are growing faster than other segments and San Jose has a high rate of independent creative entrepreneurs.
The Silicon Valley companies that are really succeeding — think Apple– understand the intrinsic aesthetic value that creativity brings to their product. San Jose’s future plan now includes steps to honor both the the left brained technologists and the right brained artists, and recognize innovation in all their various aspects. Walesh suggested that city government was crafting a future plan where not only arts and cultural facilities were included, but now individual artists were encouraged to think together with them to build an artist friendly San Jose. The Frida Kahlo’s exhibit at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art gives us an up close and personal opportunity to witness the self-explorations that the artist documented in her artwork throughout her career. Kahlo’s paintings are uniquely her own.
In her work, Kahlo paints for us the horrors of her life, with a few happy memories included to help balance her existence. Her source material draws from her Mexican heritage, the political landscape of the times, the natural world around her, the cosmos, as well as her own personal depictions of her very real physical and psychological pain.
