Social Networking and Web 2.0 for Artists

Lyn Bishop’s My Art Space profileHave you noticed the number of social networking sites specifically created for artists these days? It seems like there is a new one coming online daily. Could this be an indicator of the growing influence that the Internet offers in showcasing and, dare I say it, selling art.

These online communities are often free services (or pay to upgrade) where artists can showcase their work, chat with fellow artists online, build their network, host a blog, and create an online portfolio without having to build a stand alone website. It offers a venue for the artist to share their skills and receive feedback on their work from an international community. (more…)

DigitalEyes opens at Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery

Twister by Dan CollinsThe Sunday evening reception at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery for DigitalEyes 2008-2009: New Esthetic Dimensions in Computer Visualization Technology was a wonderful mix of art lover and computer geek.

Jennifer Gray, guest curator of the show shares with me that this is “the first international digital show at a major civic institution in the city of LA, and that in itself, makes this a historic event.” I get the feeling that she wishes it had happened years ago. (more…)

Lyn Bishop collaborative artist book If Dreams Could TalkIf Dreams Could Talk is a collaborative project that looks at the concepts of dreams and specifically the dissociated images and impressions that quickly fade upon waking.

The project has been juried into DigitalEyes 2008-2009: New Esthetic Dimensions in Computer Visualization Technology on exhibit at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery from November 6, 2008 - January 18, 2009. (more…)

Capturing 3D Surfaces with a Flash Camera: This short video explains new approaches to creating depth maps for 3D surfaces using only two photographs.

 A 3D Exploration of Picasso’s Guernica: Be patient while this animation by Lena Gleseke loads, as it is really nice exploration of a possible 3D space in which the painting could exist. (more…)

SIGGRAPH evolving

Continua: Erwin Hauer and Enrique RosadoI spent a few days at SIGGRAPH last week. The conference is evolving and trying out some new ideas in terms of redefining the attendee experience. Several large venues (Art Gallery, Studio, E-tech) were moved into a central location on the trade show floor. It created an interesting mash-up of activities together in one place.
