Is lenticular art gaining momentum in the US?

Lyn Bishop “Cherry Bomb” Lenticular 3D printIt seems that just a few years ago only a few people knew about lenticular imaging, even though the techniques have been practiced for well over a decade.

Thomas Mark, a 40 year veteran in the industry and evangelist for the trade organization FlipSigns!, points out that the origins of this industry were shady to say the least. Snake oil salesmen and shysters used the optical illusions generated through interlacing images together to trick innocent customers into believing in a products magic abilities. 01SJ is a visual feast for global art on the edge

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

DJ Spooky Terra Nova: The Antarctic SuiteThis past week, San Jose hosted the second biennial 01SJ Global Festival of Art on the Edge in it’s downtown environs. Compared to my experience two years ago, when then called Zero One shared the limelight with ISEA (International Symposium on Electronic Art), this years festival was much more approachable and ultimately more enjoyable for the attendee with artwork that was easier to find and interact with.

The First Friday SOFA Block Party generated exciting energy with people milling about, artists sharing their creativity, and music coming from all directions. The upbeat energy made for an enjoyable walk around town, from the SOFA district, to the San Jose Museum of Art (which I hope will consider staying open on First Fridays more often) to the various public art (best seen at night) placed around the central core of the city.

Color Control Freak (or Geek?)

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Bishop builds color profileOkay, I admit it, I’m a bit of a color freak/geek. Maybe not as big of a color freak/geek as some of my friends, but none-the-less, I care about my color.

That’s why I was excited to attend the Color Control Freak 08 seminar in San Francisco. The all day seminar was taught by Marc Aguilera, a color consultant for X-rite, and the Color Management Director for Encompus design studio. Marc has deep knowledge of color management practices and willingly shares his secrets with us throughout the seminar and via his blog.

A Portable Art Portfolio

Lyn Bishop Portable Portfolio

For years I have carried a small folding paper-based portable art portfolio with me everywhere I go. Dog-eared and well worn, it served it’s purpose as a quick tool to share my art with others. It has it’s limitations – it holds only 12 pieces – and updating it with new work is a labor of love (print out thumbnails, cut thumbnails, glue thumbnails to portfolio - you get the idea).

But no longer! I still carry my portable portfolio with me everywhere I go, but now-a-days, it is in the form of a sleek and ultra-modern presentation contained on my iPhone! (more…)
